Well, it was brought to my attention how neglectful I have been of my blog… so this is for you, Earnie….
I thought I would post some photos of what has kept me so busy…
I did some drawings and then transferred them to a sheet of plexiglas.. With a dremel tool, I etched the drawing onto the plexiglas…
After I inked and wiped my plate.. this is what it looked like….
Next I painted the background with printers ink and scratched around on it and spattered … Then I laid it on my printing press bed….
Then I put glue on the back of the pieces of handmade papers that I had cut out to fit onto the plate…..
Then I placed the pieces of paper onto the plate with the glue side up…. This is a booger to do because you want the papers placed just right..
Then I place a dampened piece of printing paper over the whole thing…. lay the blankets on top of it all and run it through the press. The pressure of the rollers will transfer what is on the plate onto the paper….
After I pull the paper off of the plate, I let it dry under blotters.. Once it is completely dry, I hand color it to finish it off…
and this one ended up looking like this…..
I titled this piece Before Woodstock.… mainly because the logo from Woodstock had a bird on the tip of a guitar… Oh, the paper on the banjo is from a vintage sheet of music… The total size of the image is 18 inches by 18 inches…
After I get back from doing the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver, Colorado…..It is my plan to work even BIGGER
that is it for now….
I started “Cowgirling Up” for my Fort Worth show and it just didn’t feel quite right yet…. so I decided to switch gears just a tad but still work large.
Here is one that is not quite finished yet but I thought I would post it up so you could see…. this is a combination of a monoprint with an etching plate that I made of a woman juggler…
I make my living by selling at large art shows and a few galleries… So, now I have to switch gears and start producing work for my upcoming shows.. I am getting ready for two events actually…. A Gallery show in Round Top Texas at the end of March and my first art show Main Street Art Festival in Fort Worth, Texas in April …
For Fort Worth, I always start by “Cowgirling Up”…
Since I have been working small, I want to stretch out and work a little bigger for awhile …. I am going to make some monoprint collages that will be 17 x 17 . For these I have some old Ranch Romance magazines with wonderful graphics on the front. I tore off the covers and will collage them into my monoprints along with bits of etchings floating around..
When I start, I lay them out and make my decisions about what will go into the monoprint… Remembering that I need a good strong composition to hold it all together, I need to know where the pieces will be on the plate so that I will know where to paint the printer’s ink to make it all work….
Here are a few of the “starts” that I am working on today….
These are waiting in the wings to be dealt with…. Instead of just putting them in a stack, I spread them out so that I can keep glancing at them as I am walking by, in case an idea “spurs” me on (so to speak)… Right now I am in cowgirl mode but I have a few ideas for other subjects for these large monoprints so I am excited to jump right in on these and giddy up and go (oh, dear….sorry)….
Off to Work… my Apron is on and I am about to put in the ear buds of my iPod…I think I will listen to Pink today for these..
To me, putting on my apron means getting down to business….
It means, “prepare yourself” for getting messy… well, I am pretty messy most of the time but in an apron, I can get dangerously messy….
I have plans on making 2012 a busy and messy year so I will be in my apron quite a lot.
I am a Printmaker…..
Mainly, I work with Solar Plate etchings and Monotypes. I make my own etching plates and print them either by themselves or in combination with monoprints or monotypes.
I also collect vintage papers, photographs and ephemera (old valentines, trade cards, postcards, game cards, sheet music, books and etc.).
Today, I have been composing some of my monoprint collages. They are going to be 8 x 8 inches.
I choose a pile of the ephemera that I want to use and combine them with my Solar Plates to prepare for printing….. They become what I call my “Set Ups” or “Starts”…
Here are some photos of my stuff and how I begin my process…
Once I have a good stack of these “Starts”, I will begin to print…. But that won’t happen for a few more days…… Gotta get back to work…
